Hosting is storage for your website. In layman terms a website has a number of pages that need to be stored so people can access the information.

Webpages are stored on a web server that serves these pages to the public. When visitors visit your site what happens is they request a page by typing in www.yourdomainname.com through a browser such as Internet Explorer and the web server (host) delivers the page to their computer. Web servers host your website, thus the term hosting is used.
